Natural Playing > Chestnut Cantilever
A brilliant and original way to add shade or shelter, our cantilevered chestnut structures are a far more decorative and better value alternative to traditional steel or even timber shelters. They can disguise nondescript buildings, or enhance more attractive ones, and bring quality traditional workmanship and a little magic to your site.
As they are completely self-supporting, they do not interfere with buildings, so should not require special permission, but please do check with planning and with building control if they are roofed. Each beam can be supported both ends as shown, or cantilevered off a single post to minimise obstructions.
The large posts are attractive and obvious, and have no sharp corners, which minimises any collision risk. They could be carved for decoration, and can be drilled to take hanging baskets or decorations, musical chimes etc. Twisted hazel or willow climbing plant supports can be added.
The unique, decorative structure can be covered with an open trellis framework for climbing plants such as roses or wisteria. Alternatively it could be fully or partially roofed with shade materials such as rush matting; roofed with heather thatch or chestnut shingles over a weather-proof membrane; or even with transparent polycarbonate sheet. The addition of guttering could collect rainwater for watering.
